Unschool for Life

Unschooling is a transformative journey…let’s travel together!

Unschool for Life provides authentic community, deep skills and compassionate support for learners, families, and educators who want to live and learn outside the box. Through a range of in-person and online offerings, we create spaces where individuals can explore deschooling and self-directed learning, share their stories, and learn from one another. We recognize that the journey towards freedom includes the need for healing from oppressive parenting, schooling and other systems. By co-creating community and working together to heal, we develop the courage and trust to reclaim sovereignty over our lives and learning.

For learners needing to unleash themselves from the constraints of conventional education, parents yearning for a more gratifying, holistic approach to life with their children and educators longing to engage with learning in more meaningful ways, we’re here to support, inspire and empower you as you travel your unique unschooling path.

Who We Serve

  • Parents/Families

There is a growing desire among parents for a more fulfilling way of living life with their children. The feeling that there must be a more meaningful way to navigate the joys and challenges of family life has caused people to question the conventional scripts we’ve inherited. There is a longing for a deeper, more enriching experience that nurtures lasting curiosity and love for life. Unschooling families yearning for a more gratifying, holistic lifestyle are embracing journeys of self-discovery, mutual respect and healing; trusting that how they tend their family not only makes all the difference for them personally, but also creates positive ripple effects into the collective future.

  • Educators/Facilitators

For educators longing to leave behind schoolish approaches and instead engage with learning in non-coercive, holistic ways, we’re here to support you throughout your transition to self-directed living and learning. We understand the desire you have to break free from systems that promote conformity and competition over diversity and cooperation. Like you, we believe that education should be a journey of exploration and self-discovery. That's why we provide in depth support to help you dig deep into your conditioned biases, explore unschooling philosophy and create relationally centered learning environments that nurture joyful, natural learning.

  • Teens / Young Adults

For teens and young adults struggling under the constraints of conventional education, unschooling opens up worlds of possibility and freedom. With the desire to learn and grow on your own terms, you can break away from rigid structures and predefined routes to embrace a more flexible, personalized and joyful approach to life and learning where curiosity and intuition become your trusted guides. By taking ownership of your learning and designing your own life journey, you have the opportunity to delve deep into your passions, dabble in your many interests, cultivate all kinds of valuable skills, explore off the beaten path and find what truly lights you up inside.

"If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it's not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take. That's why it's your path."

Joseph Campbell

What People Are Saying

"I will be eternally grateful to you for introducing me to SDE and a slower more intentional way to live and learn with my children. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

— A.T,. parent & program participant

“Your programs nurtured our family and brought our girls joy, inspiration and growth. You have put so much of your heart and soul into all of these learning spaces for the children and we recognize and appreciate your talent, devotion and integrity. You are a rare soul; in a world consumed with speed, productivity and technology you are genuine, compassionate and mindful. Thank you for all you do for the children and us families. You continue to make the world a better place for us all.”

—C.G., parent & program participant

“Heather's expert guidance has been instrumental in helping my family navigate the world of unschooling and self-directed education. Her heart-centered nature, genuine compassion, and deep commitment to liberated learning is truly remarkable. She also has a way with words, helping others feel seen and understood, and clearly articulating the vision of SDE. She reframes personal struggles by weaving them back into their larger context of generational, societal, and cultural systems. By keeping the big picture in mind, her mentorship has infused our family’s path with greater clarity, intention, meaning, and purpose. She reminds me that this is not a quick fix or an easy answer, but rather a systematic reboot—a healing journey for the entire family. With Heather's guidance, I am reminded that this work is truly revolutionary and has the power to create lasting change for generations to come.”

— S.J., parent & program participant

“I just wanted to share how grateful I am for the conversation we had a couple days ago and let you know that it was really meaningful to me. I appreciate you taking the time to chat about some of these topics that can be challenging and am grateful for everything you've done for our family.”

—J.B., parent & program participant

"I just kept saying “yes, yes, yes.” I am truly grateful for the time and energy you put into this course. From the zoom chats to the resources. It was incredibly lifegiving. There is so much to digest and I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!"

—J.S., parent & program participant

“Trust in families and in neighborhoods and individuals to make sense of the important question, 'What is education for?'.…. Our type of schooling has deliberately concealed the fact that such a question must be framed and not taken for granted if anything beyond a mockery of democracy is to be nurtured. It is illegitimate to have an expert answer that question for you.”
